Mark Contreras Waiss

MARK CONTRERAS WAISS (1995) has a Bachelor in composition at the National University of Music of Peru. Winner of the 2021 Twisted Spruce Composition Competition, Winner of the Azahar Press Prize 2021, Winner of TAKI 2019 Composition Competition, Finalist of the 2020 Bruno Maderna Composition Competition in Ukraine and Winner of the Kalevi and Laura Fiestas Award, Finland, with the Synapsis collective. He was born on September 2, 1995 in Lima. He spent his childhood in Pucallpa, showing inclinations to the composition from an early age. At 17 years old, he entered the Preparatory Section of the National Conservatory of Music. In 2016 he finished his studies and complete his general musical training. In 2017, he started his composition studies at the National University of Music of Peru. He studied with the composers Benjamin Bonilla (2016-2018), José Sosaya (2019) and Dante Valdez (2021). He was commissioned by the Peruvian-Japanese Association to make a piece for the choral of the Festival "Utaimashoo" ("Let's sing") when he was a student, a responsibility that he assumed again in 2018. The same year, he premiered the following works: Vacío, directed by the composer Benjamín Bonilla, Suite for guitar  quartet performed by the Eunoia quartet (Lima-Peru). In 2019, he participated at the VIII Encuentro entre  compositores e instrumentistas (ECI) in La Plata city, Argentina, premiering his work Wiraqocha. 

After returning from Argentina, he premiered his works Preludes for piano, performed by himself in  SINAPSIS, concert of contemporary work (Lima-Peru), Ícaros for electronic media (Lima-Peru) and Pueblo  Joven, presented in the Foyer of the Great National Theater of Peru. In the same year, he was the winner of  the TAKI Composition Competition, organized by the National University of Music, obtaining the first place with his work ¿Quién soy? and third place with his work Patibamba. 

At the beginning of 2020, his work Aires peruanos was premiered at the FEMUSC festival in Santa Catalina  – Brazil. His work Chavín de Huantar was premiered by the Lima Art Guide and the same year he was the  finalist of the Bruno Maderna Composition Competition promoted by the LVIV PHILHARMONIC  SOCIETY, premiering his work Peruvian Fantasy for string quartet by the "Phoenix Quartet" at the City of  Iviv-Ukraine. In 2021 his work Peruvian Fantasy was broadcast on radio Filarmonía 102.7. His work Ícaros was published inside the disc UNO-works for electronic media, Promoted by the National University of Music  of Peru.  

He was awarded a scholarship to study at the Curtis Mentor Network Program (Philadelphia-USA) allowing  him to take courses of composition and orchestration with the outstanding composer Jonathan Bailey  Holland. He received a full scholarship at the SEWANEE MUSIC FESTIVAL in Tenneesse-USA, where he  premiered his work Preludios para cello and piano receiving classes with the outstanding Argentine composer  Jorge Variego. During the program, he was asked to write a work for soprano and piano for OperaFest  Sewanee 2021. His piece for three guitars Tondero was premiered in Mexico by the ensemble Toccato. In the  same year he win the Twisted Spruce Composition Competition with his work Impromptu in the United  States, also he received the Azahar Press prize. He receive a commission by Twisted Spruce Music  Foundation for his work Danza. He was a presenter at the Visiones Sonoras Festival (Puebla-Mexico),  presenting their collective work "Sound De-fragmentations" and later in Soma Rumor (Brazil) in the online  edition. The National Choir of Peru premiered his work Quilla mama on november of 2021.  

His works have been presented in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, the United States, Ukraine and Peru. He has pieces published in the UCLA Music Library, Azahar Press, Music Brokers Argentina S.A. and the National University of Music of Peru.

Su niñez transcurrió en Pucallpa, acercándose a la música de manera autodidacta y demostrando inclinaciones a la composición desde temprana edad. A los 17 años ingresó a la Sección de Jóvenes del Conservatorio Nacional de Música en 2014 hasta culminar su formación musical general en 2016. En 2017 inició sus estudios de composición en la sección de Estudios Superiores de la Universidad Nacional de Música, siendo discípulo de los compositores Benjamín Bonilla (2016-2018), José Sosaya (2019) y Dante Valdez (2020 - 2021). Siendo aún estudiante de composición en el año 2017 fue comisionado por la Asociación Peruano Japonés para hacer un arreglo para la masa coral  del Festival “Utaimashoo” (“Cantemos”), responsabilidad que volvió a asumir en el 2018.  Asimismo, ese año recibió la comisión de componer el himno del hospital Cayetano Heredia. En el  transcurso del 2018 estrenó las siguientes obras: Vacío, dirigida por el compositor Benjamín Bonilla,  Suite para cuarteto de guitarras interpretado por el cuarteto Eunoia (Lima-Perú). En el 2019  participó en el VIII Encuentro entre Compositores e Instrumentistas (ECI) en la ciudad de La Plata,  Argentina, estrenando su obra Wiraqocha.  

Al volver al Perú estrenó sus obras Preludios para piano, interpretado por el mismo compositor  (UNM Lima- Perú), Ícaros para medios electrónicos (Lima- Perú) y Pueblo joven, siendo presentada  en el Foyer del Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú. En el mismo año fue ganador del concurso coral  TAKI, organizado por la Universidad Nacional de Música, obteniendo el primer puesto con su obra  ¿Quién soy? y tercer puesto con su obra Patibamba.  

A inicios de 2020 se estrenó su obra Aires peruanos en el festival FECMUS realizado en Santa  Catalina – Brasil, Chavín de Huantar presentada por la Guía de Arte de Lima y finalista del BRUNO  MADERNA COMPOSITION COMPETITION 2020 impulsado por la LVIV PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY,  estrenando su obra Fantasía peruana para cuarteto de cuerda por la “Phoenix Quartet” en la ciudad  de Iviv – Ucrania. En enero de 2021 se transmitió su obra Fantasía peruana en radio Filarmonía  102.7. En el mismo mes se publicó su obra “Ícaros” dentro del disco UNO - obras para medios  electrónicos, impulsado por la Universidad Nacional de Música del Perú.  

A inicios de 2021 fue becado para estudiar en Curtis Mentor Network permitiéndole llevar cursos de composición y orquestación con el destacado compositor Jonathan Bailey Holland. A mediados  del mismo año fue becado en SEWANEE MUSIC FESTIVAL en Tenneesse - USA, donde estrenó su  obra Preludios para cello y piano recibiendo clases también con el destacado compositor argentino  Jorge Variego. Se le encargó a su vez componer una obra para soprano y piano para la OperaFest  Sewanee 2021 para ser estrenada a fin de año. En México se estrenó su pieza para tres guitarras  “Tondero” por el ensamble Toccato. A la mitad de año gana el 2021 Twisted Spruce Composition Competition estrenando su obra Impromptu en Estados Unidos, recibe también el Azahar Press Prize. Recibió una comisión para la creación de su obra Danza por Tiwstwd Spruce Music Foundation. Fue ponente en el festival Visiones Sonoras presentando su obra colectiva “De fragmentaciones sonoras” y posteriormente en SomaRumor en Brasil en su edición online. En  octubre del mismo año el Coro Nacional del Perú estrena su obra Quilla Mama. 

Sus obras se han presentado en países como Brasil, México, Colombia, Argentina, Estados Unidos, Ucrania y Perú. Tiene piezas publicadas en la UCLA Music Library en California y la Universidad Nacional de Música, incluyendo su obra “Ícaros” dentro del material discográfico UNO.
