Prisma (2022) - Tuba & Fixed Media

The title PRISMA is a play on the word “prism,” which is an optical component that disperses light, forming rainbows. Programmatic in nature, the piece represents the journey of a person who has discovered something new about themself and their journey through finding comfort in an unfamiliar identity. The first section represents apprehension as the person is unsure of how to proceed in uncharted territory. This is followed by a tumultuous middle section representing the internal struggle of this person as they are becoming comfortable with a new version of themselves, followed by an optimistic ending for the person as they continue throughout life’s journey. True to her compositional signature, Aliyah fuses the influences of many genres, including neo-classical, R&B, and pop styles.
